The DGT traffic authority’s special operation starts on Friday 30 October at 15:00 and in the Valencian Community runs until midnight on Sunday 1 November. The worst congestion is expected on Friday from 16:00 to 22:00.
The DGT forecasts 5,340,000 long-distance trips plus many short ones to cemeteries. Most people will leave cities on Friday evening and Saturday morning, 31 October, including on roads to the coast and second-home areas. Roadworks will be halted and sports events on roads restricted; radars, helicopters, drones and cameras that detect phone use and unfastened seat belts will be active. The DGT is also watching routes to Andalusia, as after the Urda crash some rail passengers will switch to coaches and cars.
For Costa Blanca residents: heavy traffic is expected on the approaches to coastal towns at the weekend, as holidaymakers and second-home owners arrive. If you are going to a cemetery, check the special services: in Torrevieja free buses run to the cemetery from 30 October to 1 November. The DGT website publishes live traffic conditions.
