Alicante council has started the approval process for a new district, El Pino y Ruaya, in the north of the city by Avenida de Denia: 2,500 homes, an area for businesses and services and a 340,000 m² park, Lomas del Pino. The Generalitat must first carry out a strategic environmental and territorial assessment.

The 879,000 m² site lies on the border with Sant Joan d’Alacant and Mutxamel. Next to it the general plan also provides for the Vista Alegre (2,000 homes) and Alameda (1,300) districts, and to the south the Vistahermosa Juncaret sector with 3,500 homes.

For Costa Blanca residents it is a sign that northern Alicante will become one of the main areas of new building. But this is only the start of a change to the general plan (amendment no. 54): the council gives no construction dates or prices, and the first flats are years away.
