Giacomo Puccini's Madama Butterfly is set to a libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa and premiered at La Scala in Milan in 1904. In Elche it is staged in three acts.

📍 What the opera is about

Cio-Cio-San, a fifteen-year-old Japanese geisha, marries the American naval officer Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton. She believes in true love and stays faithful to him, while he sees the marriage as a passing amusement. Years later Pinkerton returns with an American wife, Butterfly's son is taken from her, and the story ends in tragedy.
