About
The visitor centre of the Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja Natural Park (Generalitat Valenciana), in the former forest ranger’s house in La Mata. According to the park’s website it covers 3,700 ha, of which 2,100 ha are water: the Torrevieja lagoon (1,400 ha) and the La Mata lagoon (700 ha), on land belonging to Guardamar, Torrevieja, Los Montesinos and Rojales. With El Hondo and the Santa Pola salt pans they form a triangle of internationally important wetlands. A canal links the lagoons and El Acequión links them to the sea; La Mata acts as a warming basin while salt is harvested in the Torrevieja lagoon.
