La Mata beach and Torrelamata (Torrevieja): Playa de La Mata, the lagoons, market and what is nearby

Playa de La Mata is Torrevieja’s longest beach (about 2.36 km): La Mata-Norte and La Mata-Sur with its 2026 Blue Flag, assisted bathing, a footpath along the dunes, a 15th–16th-century tower, the flamingo lagoon, the Wednesday market and useful contacts in Torrelamata.

Where it is

La Mata (Torrelamata) is the northern part of the municipality of Torrevieja. Its beach borders Guardamar del Segura to the north and the rest of Torrevieja to the south, via Cabo Cervera. Behind the village lies La Mata lagoon, part of the natural park.

La Mata beach

About 2.36 km of fine sand — Torrevieja’s longest beach. La Mata-Norte (about 415 m, from the Acequión canal to Avenida de los Europeos) is closest to the village: here you find the tower by the old jetty, the restored “A. J. Cavanilles” dune, an area for people with reduced mobility and assisted bathing in summer. In the middle of La Mata-Sur is the Molino del Agua municipal natural area with its dunes. La Mata-Sur holds the 2026 Blue Flag.

Walks: footpath, tower and jetty

The La Mata footpath (Senda Peatonal) runs along the sea from the village to the Molino del Agua park; it is a lit wooden path with adapted sections, open 24 hours. La Mata tower is a round 15th–16th-century watchtower that guarded the coast and the salt works. It is closed to visitors, but the Plaza del Embarcadero next to it is always open and you can see the remains of the old jetty from there.

La Mata and Torrevieja Lagoons Natural Park

The park covers two salt lagoons. La Mata lagoon has signposted trails and bird-watching points — flamingos, avocets and black-winged stilts — and guided walks (ecorutas) that you can book on the tourism website. Because of its protected status, Torrevieja’s Pink Lagoon (Laguna Rosa) can only be visited on the tourist train. The park’s visitor centre phone number is 965 721 650.

Market and shopping

On Wednesdays La Mata has its weekly market on Avenida de Francia: fresh produce, clothing and assorted goods. Torrevieja’s big Friday market is on Avenida Delfina Viudes.
