Who sells electricity — and can you choose?
Iberdrola is a major energy group, but not Spain’s only electricity retailer. You can compare Iberdrola, Repsol, Naturgy, Endesa and other companies. A particular group’s network in your area does not require you to buy from that group’s retailer.
A comercializadora sells electricity under your contract; a distribuidora operates the local network. You choose your retailer, while the distributor depends on the location. Find the network company and fault contact on your bill.
Spain has free-market and regulated options. PVPC is contracted through a comercializadora de referencia. A familiar brand’s ordinary offer is not automatically a regulated tariff.
Companies to compare
Compare current plans rather than brand names. This is a selection of examples, not a cheapest-provider ranking.
| Company | What to check |
|---|---|
| Iberdrola | The chosen plan, price duration, review mechanism and extra services. |
| Repsol | Electricity charges separately from rewards and linked offers: do those benefits suit you? |
| Naturgy | Energy and capacity prices, promotional period and additional services. |
| Endesa | The specific plan, promotions, renewal and service packages. |
Compare the total cost
Compare annual costs for your usage, energy and capacity charges, applicable hours, taxes, meter rental and extras. A low advertised kWh price does not guarantee the lowest bill.
Check maintenance, repair, emergency assistance and insurance packages. Ask whether they are required, their post-promotion cost and cancellation terms. Review contract duration, commitment clauses and early termination.
Use CNMC’s comparison tool with your bill data. Its QR code can import consumption information.
Why a bill may increase
Check bills and notifications for expiring discounts, changed usage and tariff terms. Compare consumption, unit prices, capacity, extras and billing dates. A higher bill does not necessarily mean the retailer increased its price.
Do not assume unannounced changes are a normal practice of a particular company. Real Decreto 88/2026 provides for written notice of intended contractual changes at least a month in advance, separately from the bill, with information on the right to terminate without cost. Indexed pricing and regulated components require separate attention to their calculation mechanism.
If an increase is unclear, request an explanation, the basis for the review and a copy of the notification. Check email, the customer area and contractual contact channels. Keep the offer and signed contract.
Online contracting: identify the task
An existing supply with a new owner or tenant usually needs cambio de titular. Changing retailer is cambio de comercializadora. A property without active supply needs an alta or reactivation, potentially requiring technical documents and charges.
Many procedures are available on official company websites. Confirm prices, extras and account-holder details before accepting; keep the contract and application reference.
Prepare electricity documents
As a practical starting set, prepare an accepted ID such as a passport, NIE if available, the full address, email, telephone and IBAN for payments. Also prepare the tenancy agreement or ownership evidence. A nota simple may help but does not always replace a required deed or other document.
Ask the previous owner or tenant for the latest complete electricity bill, all pages. The CUPS supply-point code is particularly important; the contract number, capacity, tariff and distributor details are also useful.
CUPS identifies the supply point, not the person. If there is no previous bill, ask the company how to identify it through another route.
New or reactivated supply may require a CIE / boletín eléctrico and occupancy-related documents. The precise list depends on the installation and procedure. A name change and a new connection are different processes.
Water: Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa differ
For Torrevieja, contact AGAMED. For Orihuela, including Orihuela Costa, check Hidraqua / Veolia. Select the address or postcode, procedure and owner/tenant status on the official site; do not apply one municipality’s list to another.
Use cambio de titular for existing supply, alta de suministro if supply is absent, and check acometida if there is no network connection.
Prepare the latest complete water bill, contract number, new account-holder details, contacts, IBAN and evidence of the right to use the property. Representatives should check the authorisation form and both parties’ documents.
Additional documents, signatures, landlord consent and property permissions depend on the address and procedure. These links lead to official document selectors, not a universal checklist.
Internet and household services
Check internet coverage at the exact address, total charges, installation, commitment and equipment-return terms. Agree the scope and price of household work in advance.
Tairix tip: photograph meter readings at handover and agree the contract-transfer date. Check completion confirmation and the first bill in your name.
