Alicante’s local government board approved handing the regional Health Department a 1,963 m² former supermarket on Calle Pedreguer, bought by the council in 2024, for a new San Gabriel health centre.
The transfer uses a “mutación demanial externa”, which moves ownership between administrations without changing the building’s purpose: it goes to the Generalitat for healthcare only. If the health centre is never opened there or later closes, the building returns to the council. Municipal and regional technicians have already inspected the premises and found them suitable.
For residents of southern Alicante this is a step towards a new primary care centre, but the council gives no dates for refurbishment or opening: the work will be done by the regional Health Department. According to the council, it is the city’s fourth new health centre, alongside La Torreta, Garbinet and La Condomina, in which the Generalitat is investing over €30 million.
