Alicante council has approved a €5.56m project to protect against rockfalls on the Benacantil slope below Santa Bárbara castle. The work will take 14 months; emergency work costing €1.5m has been under way there since September 2025.
An emergency procedure was declared on 2 September 2025 because of a serious risk of rockfalls, as time and erosion have weakened the rock. The contractor also drew up a detailed project, which has now pinned down the danger zones, the scope of work and the final cost.
Mount Benacantil and Santa Bárbara castle rise above central Alicante and are among the city’s main sights. The council stresses that safety comes first; the announcement does not mention any access restrictions during the work.
