La Pedrera reservoir near Torremendo (Orihuela), a few kilometres from Torrevieja, has been added to Spain’s national inventory of wetlands, recognising it as an important site for waterbirds.
The decision was taken by the national Directorate-General for Biodiversity at the request of the Valencian Community. The resolution notes that water levels at La Pedrera change little, its banks have marsh vegetation and it holds large and varied numbers of waterbirds. The reservoir is linked to the Rambla de Alcoriza and the Sierra de Escalona natural park.

For people in Torremendo, Orihuela Costa and Torrevieja, La Pedrera is a familiar spot for walks and birdwatching. Wetland status does not stop visits, but it obliges the authorities to protect the site; Orihuela’s environment councillor Noelia Grao called it Torremendo’s “flag”.
