El Altet to get a €5.1m community and cultural centre

Elche mayor Pablo Ruz announced that on Thursday the council executive will approve drafting the construction project for a new community and cultural centre in El Altet, the district next to the airport. The estimated cost of the works is almost €5.1 million.

The centre will stand on the site of the old school, a plot of about 3,000 m² on Avenida Dama de Elche, with 2,400 m² of floor space over two storeys. The Generalitat handed the plot over to the council on 1 October, and the mayor says that transfer was the hardest step.

Inside there will be a multipurpose hall with a stage for 300 people, a day centre for older people and a youth centre (150 m² each) and a study room. For residents of El Altet and the nearby estates around the airport it is the first large public building in years; a construction timetable will follow once the project is approved.
