Airbnb now sends 10 cents from every home booking to its nonprofit Airbnb.org, which provides free housing to people who have lost their homes. Guests and hosts pay nothing extra; the goal is $500 million over five years.
Since 2020 the fund has provided 1.6 million free nights to more than 250,000 people: victims of disasters such as the Hawaii wildfires and families travelling for medical treatment. It currently gives around 100,000 nights a year and aims to reach one million a year by the fifth year.
The contribution is the same in every country and applies only to homes, not hotels, experiences or services; most of the money will come from the company itself. A Safe Havens pilot for survivors of domestic violence will soon start in Utah. For Costa Blanca holiday-let owners nothing changes, but every booking now helps a little to put a roof over someone’s head.
