Orihuela replants about 100 palms in its historic Palmeral

Orihuela council’s environment department has moved about 100 palms from the municipal nursery to the Historic Palmeral to fill gaps and gradually renew the grove.
This is routine conservation work: new palms are planted where old ones have died, so the landscape stays continuous and the age of the trees changes gradually. The saplings come from the council’s own nursery and were chosen to suit the site’s natural and historic character.
The Palmeral at the foot of San Miguel hill is one of the most recognisable landscapes of the Vega Baja and a favourite walking spot for people from Orihuela and Orihuela Costa. For coastal residents it is a good reason to visit Orihuela’s historic centre: the grove lies at the town entrance from the Murcia side.
