Garage or ITV: what is the difference
ITV is the official roadworthiness test: the station only inspects the car and does no repairs. Many garages offer a “pre-ITV” check so you can fix faults beforehand. If the ITV finds a defect, you get it repaired at a garage and then go back for a re-inspection.
Your rights at the garage
Garages in Spain are regulated by Royal Decree 1457/1986. The key points for customers:
- Written estimate (presupuesto): you are entitled to one, and it is valid for at least 12 working days. Work may start only once you have signed it or expressly waived it.
- If the car stays at the garage, you are given a deposit receipt (resguardo de depósito).
- The invoice (factura) must be written, signed, stamped and itemised.
- Repairs carry a warranty of 3 months or 2,000 km from the date the car is handed back, whichever comes first, covering parts and labour. If a part has a longer warranty, the longer one applies.
- Garages must have complaint forms (hojas de reclamaciones). A complaint must be filed within two months of the car being handed back or of the warranty ending.
If you do not speak Spanish
Ask about the language when you book and send a written description of the problem by WhatsApp or email, with photos or video if possible. Useful words:
- presupuesto — estimate; factura — invoice; garantía — warranty
- revisión — service; cambio de aceite — oil change; pastillas de freno — brake pads
- neumáticos — tyres; correa de distribución — cambelt; vehículo de sustitución — courtesy car
