Torrevieja: what the beach bylaw says
Torrevieja’s municipal beach bylaw (BOP of 2 May 2018) bans pets on the beach and in the water during the bathing season, and outside the season whenever people are on the beach. The exceptions are signposted dog beaches and assistance dogs for people with disabilities. If you break the rule you can be asked to leave and fined.
Cala del Rocío dog beach
Torrevieja’s official tourism website describes Cala del Rocío as a cove set up for swimming with dogs. It is a small natural cove in the south of the town, in the Punta Prima urbanisation, between Cala Ferris and Cala Piteras. The tourist office advises wearing suitable footwear, bringing water, cleaning up after your dog and keeping it under control.
In 2021 the town hall added a dog shower, a platform with agility equipment, shade and signs. According to the town hall the cove is open to everyone, but people with pets have priority. It is the closest option for Orihuela Costa residents: Punta Prima sits on the border between the two municipalities.
Orihuela and Orihuela Costa
Orihuela’s municipal animal ownership bylaw (Article 11) bans animals from the municipality’s beaches, including the whole Orihuela Costa coastline. In the street a dog must be kept under control on a lead (Article 10), and owners must pick up after it with a waterproof bag and put it in the nearest bin. We found no official dog beach on the town hall website.
The town hall’s pets page also refers to Valencian regional Law 2/2023 on the protection of companion animals.
Guardamar: where to walk your dog
Neither the town hall nor the tourist office website mentions a dog beach in Guardamar, so check the rules for each beach on the signs and at the tourist office (tel. 96 572 44 88). The tourism website does explicitly mention dog walking on the trails of Parque Alfonso XIII — more than 8 km of paths in the pine forest — and a fenced dog area in Parc de les Nyores in the south of town.
Tips for hot weather
- In summer walk early in the morning and in the evening: sand and asphalt get very hot during the day.
- Bring water for your dog and yourself: the tourist office specifically recommends it for Cala del Rocío.
- Look for vets and groomers in our business directory.
