In the Valencian public system each hospital is the hub of a health department that serves specific towns, and your SIP card is linked to a health centre in one of them. Torrevieja and nearby towns belong to Hospital Universitario de Torrevieja, Orihuela and most of the Vega Baja to Hospital Vega Baja, the Vinalopó department (Elche) to Vinalopó hospital, and the “Alicante – Hospital General” department to Dr. Balmis. Quirónsalud Torrevieja is a private hospital: you go with insurance or pay yourself. If life is at risk, call 112.

How to get an appointment
- Family doctor or nurse: at your own health centre, through the Generalitat’s GVA +Salut app (with your SIP card) or by phoning the centre.
- A hospital specialist in the public system usually requires a referral from your family doctor; with the referral (volante) you book at the hospital, for example on Vega Baja’s outpatient appointments line, or through admissions at Vinalopó.
- The SAIP patient service handles requests to change doctor, centre or hospital; Vinalopó has its own procedure for choosing it freely as your hospital.
- No appointment is needed for the emergency department. At the private Quirónsalud you book by phone or online; check your cover with your insurer beforehand.
Urgent care at night: Orihuela, Guardamar, Torrevieja
Hours are taken from each centre’s page on the health department websites. “Atención continuada” is the on-call urgent care a health centre provides when normal surgeries are closed.

Private hospital and insurance
According to the Quirónsalud group, its Torrevieja hospital has 24-hour adult emergency care, daytime paediatric emergencies, an ICU, a laboratory and imaging, plus an international patient department. A private hospital is not automatically covered by your policy: before you go, ask your insurer whether the service is included and whether you need authorisation.
